During her training years, Piera studied and collaborated with architects, architecture historians and critics such as Manfredo Tafuri, Bruno Zevi, Eugenio Battisti, Umberto Eco,  Vittorio Gregotti, Cini Boeri, Piero Castiglioni.

Piera has published numerous articles on architecture in journal magazines such as Domus, Rassegna, Abitare, Flare, Le Scienze (Scientific American), Ufficio Stile, WOW digital magazine, as well as three books, on the topics of skyscrapers, the design of offices, and work spaces centred on man-machine system interactions.

As a researcher for the Italian National Research Council, Piera has worked on research projects regarding the realisation of digital manuals on workspace design for the advanced tertiary sector, and the realisation of the prototype of adynamic and automated lighting system, alongside Douglas Skene.

Co-founder and CEO

Douglas Skene His expertise in Ergonomics and Control Room Console design set new industry standards and pioneered the design of Digital Command Centres, expanding Spazio’s market reach to India, Russia, and Turkey.

Born in Canada, Douglas Skene pursued his passion for design by studying Industrial Design at Carleton University. His career began with an international focus, gaining valuable experience at the Philips Design Center in the Netherlands before returning to Canada to work at Scott Gibson Product Design office in Ottawa, Canada.

Seeking deeper engagement with the world of Italian Design and creativity, Douglas moved to Milan, where he worked with renowned designer Denis Santachiara on both product and interior design projects. In 1988, he began a long-term collaboration with Piera Scuri, marking the start of his specialization in Control Room design and Architectural projects.

As co-founder, Douglas played a key role in Spazio’s evolution, designing, alongside Piera Scuri, its first control rooms for the Himont in Italy and developing the first dynamic lighting systems that enhance operator alertness.

Today, at Spazio, he oversees commercial and administrative operations while continuing to drive forward design concepts, technical details, and construction for cutting-edge digital command/control environments.

Our story

Spazio was founded in 1987 by Arch. Piera Scuri. Ever since its inception, Spazio specialised its work in the niches of command center design, lighting design and ergonomics. In its early years, Spazio patented the SIVRA Illumination System, aimed at improving work efficiency in difficult environments. In the year 2000, Spazio’s work reached the international market and began to operate in a variety of countries, such as UAE, India and Oman. Around 2016, Spazio’s conceptualisation of the workspace evolved to integrate digital and AI technology. In 2019, Spazio completed the State of the Art Panorama Digital Command Center, in Abu Dhabi, which best exemplifies their pioneer work on digital command centers.
